The Feature → Benefit → Business Outcome Framework

Purpose of This Lesson

To stop feature dumping and start value selling.

3.1 Why Features Alone Are Dangerous

When you talk only about features:

  • The customer compares you technically
  • Procurement controls the conversation
  • Price becomes the main decision factor

Your job is to translate.

3.2 Understanding the Three Layers

Every TFAM capability must be explained in three layers:

  1. Feature – What the system does
  2. Benefit – What the user gains
  3. Business Outcome – Why management cares

3.3 Example Walkthrough

Feature:

RFID-enabled inventory using handheld devices

Benefit:

Inventory becomes faster and more accurate

Business Outcome:

Audits take less time, errors are reduced, and asset discrepancies decrease year over year

3.4 Practice Rule (Mandatory)

You are not allowed to mention a feature unless you can finish the sentence:

“This matters because…”

If you cannot finish the sentence, do not mention the feature.
